Major Misconceptions about Quran Among The Non-Muslims

For Muslims there is no book Holier than Quran in this world. For them Reading The Holy Quran is a source of Divine knowledge and a gift from Allah to help them live life in a better way and understand the instructions and guidelines of Islam. Besides the carrying of guidelines, Quran also carries light of spirituality that helps Muslims transcend to a higher level.

The People of the Book

Like there are misconceptions associated with Islam, similarly there are misconceptions related with Quran as well. People around the world because of their lack of knowledge and understanding associate different kinds of beliefs with Quran, which because of their lose groundings are mostly incorrect. This writing aims to bring to surface the major misconceptions associated with Quran and the contrary fact.

1. Quran Was Written By Muhammad (PUBH):

The biggest misconception about Quran is that people think that it was written by Muhammad and it has no Divine word in it. Such people believe that Muhammad (PBUH) being an Arab somehow wrote Quran Himself and then started its preaching to others. This is a wrong myth because of the fact that Muhammad (PBUH) was an illiterate and no unlettered person can write such a Book that contains knowledge and wisdom about the universe.

Unlettered Prophet PBUS

“Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet…………” (7:157)

Therefore, in Quran, Allah Almighty Himself calls Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) an unlettered Prophet, hence, there is no way by which He could have written Quran Himself. Further regarding this matter Allah Almighty says in Quran:

Quran is the Book from Allah

Quran Challenges Everyone

“This Quran is not such as can be produced by other than Allah; on the contrary it is a confirmation of (revelations) that went before it, and a fuller explanation of the Book – wherein there is no doubt from the Lord of the Worlds. Or do they say “He forged it?” Say: “Bring then a Surah like unto it, and call (to your aid) anyone you can, besides Allah, if it be ye speak the truth!” (10:37-38)

Thus from this ayah, it is clear that Allah Almighty has give a clear challenge to all those who think that Quran can be produced by man. The proof to this false argument can also be the fact that by now more than 1400 years have passed since the revelation of Quran, however, still no one has been able to produce a single verse that is equivalent to the stylistic attributes of Quran or its intellectual depth let alone a whole Surah.

2. Quran And Allah Are Of Muslims Only:

The second misconception about Quran is that people think that it is a Book of Muslims only and that Allah – The God mentioned in Quran is the God of Muslims only. This conception is wrong, as Allah Almighty is the God of the whole universe and all the people in it, whereas, Quran carries guidance for all the human beings. In Quran it is mentioned that:

The Almighty The Lord

“Praise be to God, the Sustainer of all the worlds.” (1:2)

From this ayah it is clear that Allah Almighty is the Lord of all the worlds, therefore, whatever lies within these worlds is from Allah. Hence, if He has bestowed Quran, then it means that it is for everyone in this world and everyone can benefit from the teachings of Quran and find their way to guidance and truth. However, in this regard, understanding the concept about the “People of the Book” is of utmost understanding.

3. Quran Tells Of A Wrathful God:

Another misconception regarding Quran is that people think of it as a Book that only tells of the wrathful image of Allah Almighty and is full with His anger and wrath. Although Quran does mention the wrath of Allah Almighty, but the mention of it is not more than the merciful image of Allah. Therefore, this idea that God is only wrath is wrong, rather there are countless ayahs in Quran that mention the merciful and compassionate side of Allah Almighty as well.

In the first Surah of Quran that is the very introduction of Quran tells about the merciful image of Allah, where the verse says:

The Compassionate

“Most Merciful, most Compassionate.” (1:3)

Therefore, Quran is not only the wrathful image of Allah Almighty, rather it gives His mercy as well. Moreover, in one of the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) he mentioned that Allah Almighty loves a person seventy times more than a mother. Hence, the mercy and love of Allah overweighs His anger and wrath.

Conclusion:

In a nutshell, Quran is neither a Book written by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) nor is it only for Muslims only. Rather, Quran is a Book for the universe and it gives both the sides of Allah Almighty where He punishes the evil and is kind, loving and merciful to the ones who do good and are righteous.
