Marriage and divorce are very intricate issues in Islam. These issues should be studied thoroughly from Quran Education know and understand the technicalities involved. Marriage is an institution in Islam, which holds a great importance. We can only learn the importance of marriage through Quran learning. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said,’ A person who posses the means to marry (i.e. he is able to work etc. to support a wife and children) and does not marry then he is not from amongst us (i.e. the believers).’
In another Hadith it is clearly mentioned that marriage is one of the things that Muslims should not delay or deny. ‘Do not delay in three things;
1) The offering of the obligatory prayer.
2) The offering of the funeral prayer when the deceased’s body is present.
3) The marriage of a woman when her couple is found’
Allah (SWT) had made it compulsory for Muslims to marry if they have means. Allah – has stated in the Quran,’ And wed the single among you’. (C24: V32). Marriage completes the life of man and woman. Allah has produced every creature in pairs. Man and woman have also been made in pairs, yet their pair only completes on getting married only.
Muslim – Non- Muslim Marriage:
Marriage being one of the important aspects of religion Islam has some technicalities to be understood. Always keep in mind that Islam prefers marriage between Muslims. In case of marrying non-Muslims, one should understand that Muslim women could not marry non-Muslims. The reason behind this is very simple. Allah has made man, the head of the family. Marrying non-Muslims would mean that she has to obey the non-Muslim, and he can stop her from following her religion.
Allah (SWT) says in the Quran,” And do not marry the ‘Mushrik’ women unless they come to believe; and a Muslim slave girl is better than a ‘Mushrik’ woman, even though she may attract you; and do not give (your women) in marriage to ‘Mushrik’ men unless they come to believe; and a Muslim slave is better than a ‘Mushrik’ even though he may attract you. They invite to the Fire when Allah invites, by His will, to the Paradise and to forgiveness, and makes His verses clear to the people, so that they may observe the advice. “ Surah Al-Baqarah 2: 221
It is clear from the above verse that Allah prefers marrying a slave girl or a slave boy rather than marrying non-Muslims. This issue is very common these days, especially where Muslims and Non- Muslims share geography and demographics.
Divorce is the issue related to marriage. Recent studies have shown that the divorce rate has been increasing over the years. , “The most hateful halal (permissible thing) to Allah is divorce.” [Surah 2:102]. Though Allah has made it easier for Muslims to get rid of the relation in case of unwanted circumstance, still it is considered one of the worst acts in Islam.
It should be tried level best to reconcile the differences amongst both parties, settlement should be tried on common grounds and if they fail to come on mutual agreement then divorce should be proceeded.
All these issue can be tackled easily if we benefit from Quran learning in our daily lives. This is why our Lord made Quran education important for us!
