The life in the Hereafter-Quranic Verses about the Day of Judgment

One of the basic Islamic belief is the fact that Muslims believe in the world hereafter. One cannot be a Muslim until and unless he/she believes in the world hereafter from a true heart. Moreover, in addition to the life in the hereafter, a Muslim has to believe in the judgment day as well, the occurrence of which decides the place a person is to live dwell in the life hereafter, either heaven or hell. In the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty promises, “Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned” (Quran, 29:57).

Religion Islam taught us that there is life after death that has no ending position. According to the teachings of Islam, when confronted with a calamity and when someone dies, one should say: “To God, we belong and to Him, we shall return” (Quran 2:156).  The word Qiyamah which means Resurrection occurs 68 times in the Holy Quran and it refers to the Qiyamah (the Day of Judgement) when every human being must have to be answerable to Almighty Allah for his Deeds either good or bad that it does in his/her life.

The word Hereafter appears in the Holy Quran 118 times and refers to the rewards and punishments that each human will receive on the Day of Judgement according to his deeds, eternal life in the gardens of Heaven or an everlasting albeit torturous lie in the fires of hell. Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Quran: “On the Day of Judgment, every individual will be resurrected to account for their lives. God describes this event in the Quran, “On that day, people will come forward in separate groups to be shown their deeds: whoever has done an atom’s weight of good will see it, but whoever has done an atom’s weight of evil will see that.” (Quran, 99:6-8)

Pertaining to the belief in the Judgment day being one of the core Islamic beliefs, Allah Almighty says in the Quran: “O you who believe! Enter whole-heartedly into Islam, and follow not the footsteps of Shaytaan for he is to you an avowed enemy.” (Quran, 2:208)

In the Holy Quran Almighty Allah says: “Indeed, the death from which you flee – indeed, it will meet you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and HE will inform you about what you used to do.” (Quran, 62:08)

Belief in the soul and the Hereafter gives an ambiance to our current existence. Those who focus only on this immediate life miss out on the reality which is the Hereafter the life which will never end. Indeed, they become negligent of their purpose in this life. Almighty Allah reminds humanity in these words, “The life of this world is merely an amusement and a diversion; the true life is in the Hereafter, if only they knew” (Quran 29:64).

The Day of Judgment is inevitable and every Muslim must have a firm belief in rising after death and standing in the court of Allah Almighty. Therefore, in this life, a Muslim must try living it according to the teachings and instructions of Islam so that on the Day of Judgment, a Muslim is found righteous and rewarded paradise instead of being otherwise.

Death is inevitable. Whatever we are doing in this worldly life is written by angels on their notebooks. We will not escape from these things because Almighty Allah knows everything and we have to be answerable for all our deeds on the day of judgment. In the Holy Quran Allah (SWT) says: And the Moon is eclipsed, and the Sun and the Moon are fused together, on that Day man will ask, “Where can I run?” No indeed! There will be no safe place. That Day, the only resting place will be your Lord. (Quran 75: 8-12)
