Sunnahs of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Before Sleeping

Islam is the best religion due to the number of reasons. Modern Era science has proved many things and concepts beneficial for us that were taught to Muslims by thousand of years ago. The Sunnah of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the source of optimum guidance for us. So, for Muslims, it’s compulsory to follow the path of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in every aspect of our life to get the reward for every action. Here we will discuss a few good things that you can do daily at night before sleeping to remember the Almighty Allah. We should make these Sunnah’s as our habit these are short powerful deeds you can do to earn rewards from Almighty Allah.

Sunnah’s Before Sleeping:

Following are some of the Sunnah’s of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with hadiths for proper sleeping.

1. Perform Wudu

Perform Wudu before sleeping as you do before offering regular prayers. Al-Bara’ bin ‘Azib (RA) said: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) directed me thus: “Whenever you go to bed, perform Wudu’ as you do for prayer then (before sleeping) recite: ‘O Allah! I have submitted myself to You, I have turned myself to You, committed my affairs to You and sought Your refuge for protection out of your desire for You and fear of You (expecting Your reward and fearing Your punishment). There is no refuge and no place of safety from You but with You. I believe in the Book You have revealed and, in the Prophet, You have sent.” ‘Messenger of Allah added: “If anyone recites these words and dies during the night, he will die on the true Deen, and if he remains alive until the morning, he will obtain good. And make this supplication your last words (before sleeping).” (Al-Bukhari)

2. Discuss the matter of Islam with Family Members

Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Would talk to his wife and whilst he praises Allah Almighty before He (SAW) goes to sleep. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Eyes are closed but the heart is still in the Remembrance of Almighty Allah. As Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) says: “My eyes sleep, but my heart does not sleep.” So, it is the Sunnah of our Prophet (PBUH) to talk about the matters of Islam before going to sleep, so as a Muslim we should follow this Sunnah.

3. Sleep on the Right Side of the Bed

It is the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to sleep on the right side of the bed. Al-Bara’ bin ‘Azib (RA) said: “Whenever Messenger of Allah went to bed, he would lie down on his right side and recite: [O Allah! I have submitted myself to You, I have turned my face to You, committed my affairs to You, and depend on You for protection out of your desire for You and out of fear of You (expecting Your reward and fearing Your punishment). There is no refuge and no place of safety from You but with You. I believed in the Book You have revealed, and in the Prophet, you have sent (i.e., Muhammad.]” (Bukhari)

4. Refrain from Sleeping on Stomach

Ya’ish bin Tikhfah Al-Ghifari (RA) said: “My father said: I was lying down on my belly in the mosque when someone shook me with his foot and said, “Lying down this way is disapproved by Allah.” I looked up and saw that it was Messenger of Allah Prophet Muhammad (SAW).” (Abu Dawood)

Being a Muslim, we must follow these Sunnah’s of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to get benefits. Recite Bismillah, perform wudu, Dust the bed and recite some verses of the Holy Quran before going to the bed for sleeping.
