Miracles of The Holy Quran (Scientific Perspective)

The word “miracle” literally means “any happening that is beyond imagination, and is generally associated with supernatural happenings and Godly matters”, e.g. mysterious nature Bermuda Triangle, and its working which is still unknown in this technological age. Alternatively, it could also be associated with a sudden happening that is beneficial or astonishing to masses, like a last minute winner in the game of Football, or the unexpected prevention of a train accident etc. Whatever the case maybe, it always has a mesmerizing effect on the mind of a common person.

Miracles do happen, and remind one of the existence of the definitive power that is the governing body of all events in this world, i.e. Allah Almighty. And, He makes clear many such occurrences to us so that we could understand things better. Same holds true in respect of the Holy Book of Quran, which the Creator of the universe revealed on His last Prophet, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), which contains discussions about a lot of phenomenon, which looked hard to believe in the past, but are now verified through increased scientific facts.

Let us talk about some of these wonders that were presented 1400 years ago in Furqan e Hameed :

Movement of the earth and other celestial bodies

Due to many misconceptions in the old times, like considering the Sun and the Moon as gods and worshiping them, the Almighty Lord has reminded the ignorant ones of the realities of the universe and things present in it, e.g. it was normally thought that mountain are always steady, stable and never move. But with the passage of time, the geologists discovered referred the earth quakes as a result of unusual shifting of plates of these hills. The Sacred Manuscript also sheds light on this topic as:

“And you see the mountains, thinking them rigid, while they will pass as the passing of clouds. [It is] the work of Allah, who perfected all things. Indeed, He is Acquainted with that which you do.” [Quran, 27: 88]

This shows the relevance of Quranic documentation with the technical knowledge we have today, as it is known that clouds, at the altitude of 3500 to 4000 meters, move in a specific direction, i.e. from west to east, which is actually also the direction of revolving of the earth around its axis. Not to forget, we also know that earth complete on spin around its axis in 24 hours, and completes its orbit around the Sun in 365 days. The comparison of cliffs with clouds in the Hallowed Volume of Quran gives indication of wisdom that we could get from it. Apart from earth`s movement, it also discusses the orbiting nature of other outer space objects, like the Sun and the Moon.

“And it is He who created the night and the day and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly bodies] in an orbit are swimming.” [Quran, 21: 33]

The above line from the Sanctified Scripture indicates the vastness of the universe in a sense that we generally used to take the Sun and the Moon as stationery some years ago, but now Science has proved that not only they former turns around once every 27 days around its equator, and takes 31 days to rotate around its poles. The latter not only spins about its axis in 27 days, but also orbits the earth one time every 27.322 days. Not only these universal entities move, but the whole system orbits around the centre of the Milky Way, and there are far more galaxies and planets in the whole universe beyond one`s mind’s eye. All this discussion leads towards on focal point, i.e. the truthfulness and unbelievable nature of the teachings of Quran with view of a naked eye.

Number of seven heavenly and earthly layers

In light of modern discoveries in Astronomy, the scientists have found out that there is Dark Matter spread across the vast universe, which is invisible, yet having detectable gravity. Due to limited research in this subject yet, it is believed that there could well be other planets and stars dwelling beyond this mysterious matter, which shows the truthfulness in Quranic wordings of seven heavens.

“It is Allah who has created seven heavens and of the earth, the like of them. [His] command descends among them so you may know that Allah is over all things competent and that Allah has encompassed all things in knowledge.” [Quran, 65: 12]

This verse tells us about the hugeness of the universe and earthly layers. It has been discovered by the geologists about seven linings of earth (oceanic crust, continental crust, upper mantle, asthenosphere, lower mantle, outer core, and inner core) which are holding it down together. These distinct layers have their unique properties, and consist of different kinds of metals and the deeper levels have higher pressure, density and temperature. This information is the proof of correctness of Quranic revelations that were made known to us a long time ago.

Creation of a human from clay and water

It has always been a debate about the possible life substance from which a human being is made of. But due to increase in the knowledge of Biological and chemical sciences, we know that the elements that are essentially present in soil also make the life form of a individual, such as iron, calcium, and zinc etc. Allah Almighty has indicated towards this fact in the Holy Book as:

“And of His signs is that He created you from dust; then, suddenly you were human beings dispersing [throughout the earth]” [Quran, 30: 20]

This Quranic verse testifies about the creation of a living being from clay. It also shows that God`s creation is divine and a masterpiece in itself, which one cannot imitate in any case. A well balanced proportion of the constituents in the living body of a human body result in its proper functioning. On the other hand,

“Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?” [Quran, 21: 30]

The above mentioned Ayah points towards importance of water in every organism`s life. The biological studies also inform that every human cell consists of 60 to 80 % of water, and no life form can survive without it. All this information leads towards a common conclusion that the Sacred Manuscript told us about these scientific findings quite some time ago.

Identity on Finger Tips

Some of the other Quranic miracles include the uniqueness of every person`s identity, when Allah, the Exalted discusses the matter subject of reforming human`s body in the Holy Script in Surah Al-Qiyama as:

“Does man think that We will not assemble his bones? Yes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips.”[Quran, 75:3-4]

It means that every person is exclusive in its individuality from another, which is also proved from the scientific invention of finger printing machines that detect the true identity of one from its DNA.

These are some of the many miracles of the Holy Quran that were revealed on us at the times when people did not even know about the true basics of science, and had fallacies about many matters. But the present scientific knowledge, research and discoveries have provided great evidence about the truthfulness and reliability of information present in this Revered Book.
